More IT Security Needed for Hotels

Hotel Websites are Often Vulnerable

Based on our several years of experience in the hotel industry, we know where hotel information technology is particularly vulnerable. A common weakness is the hotel website. While these previously served mostly as extended business cards, they now offer expanded functionalities, from reservation forms to complete online booking engines. In the process, sensitive data such as email addresses and bank details are transmitted. In a recent study, we examined a sample of 87 hotel websites and found that only seven percent of hotels use encrypted communication. This is not only a data security problem but also a violation of data protection laws. With the IT Security Act that came into force last year, the Telemedia Act (§13 paragraph 7) was extended so that website providers may only transmit personal data encrypted (i.e., via the https protocol). The Bavarian State Office for Data Protection already began reviewing websites last year that offer unencrypted contact forms.

Ransomware and WLAN Networks: Further Critical Points

Two other critical areas for hotels are, on one hand, the vulnerability to ransomware and, on the other hand, insufficiently secured WLAN networks. Guests nowadays expect a well-functioning, secure WLAN network just as much as running hot water and heating in winter.
