Live Hacking

Peeking over their shoulders

Anyone who has never seen a live hacking demonstration will ask themselves, "what is live hacking?". In a Live Hacking session, a security researcher demonstrates in front of an audience how a hacker exploits security vulnerabilities to spy out data or sabotage systems. A live hacking presentation usually consists of several live hacks.

Examples of Live Hacks

Popular and frequently shown live hacks are attacks on smartphones, for example by presenting fake WLAN access points (Probe Request Sniffing and Evil Twin attacks). But also demonstrating the capabilities of viruses and Trojans as well as eavesdropping on website communication are popular live hacks. Finally, live hacks usually also make use of all kinds of hacker gadgets such as LAN Turtles (eavesdropping on LAN connections), Rubber Duckys and Teensys (attacks via USB sticks) as well as WiFi Pineapples (WLAN access points).

Goals of Live Hacking

The goal of live hacking is to raise the audience's awareness of IT security through an emotional appeal. Well-presented live hacks are comparable in their entertainment value to an exciting magic show by a magician such as David Copperfield. Despite the entertainment factor, the goal of a live hack is also to present the audience with concrete measures they can take to protect themselves against IT security threats.

Where do Live Hacks take place?

Live hacking presentations are frequently offered as part of IT security events. Live hacks are also increasingly found in the supporting programs of IT trade fairs, congresses and conferences as well as vendor events. They offer a relaxed change from dry PowerPoint presentations.

Contact us if you are interested in booking a live hacking event for your own occasion. The aramido security consultants have already amazed audiences with exciting live hacks at various events. If you want to attend an aramido live hack yourself, follow the event announcements in this blog.
